Baked Bean Recipes

It's funny that most know baked beans to simply be a side dish to meals, complimenting the other foods rather than be the standout items themselves. However baked beans really are natures super food and should be enjoyed by themselves rather than be pushed to the side dish.
As far as healthy foods go, it doesn't get much better than tin of baked beans. The reason why they are always used in bunkers or places which require long term survival is that you can live for years eating nothing but baked beans, they have nearly all the essential nutrients your body needs in droves. Beans are members of the legume family, like peas, and they are an excellent source of protein, iron, and starch.
Recipe Number #1

  • 1 pint white beans
  • 1 tablespoon malt honey or molasses
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 pints boiling water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup butter
To start off with, soak the beans overnight in a pot in cold water. Drain the water the next day and add about 3 pints of fresh water to the pot, bring the water to a boil and boil for around 2 hours or until the beans begin to break open, stirring occasionally.
Add the seasoning and place everything into an oven safe dish, bake in a slow oven for four or five hours, adding water if necessary. Remove the cover about 30 minutes before you finish baking to allow the beans to brown.
Recipe Number #2

  • 1 pint California pea beans
  • 2½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
Soak the beans in water overnight, then the following day, drain the water and put the beans into a bean pot or oven safe dish. Add the remaining ingredients with enough water to cover everything.Bake the ingredients in an oven at moderate heat for 12 hours, leave to cool after cooking, and enjoy.
Other types of peas can be used other than the Californian ones and molasses can be substituted with sugar however the molasses give a real Boston baked bean taste which is simply irresistible.
