In a bold departure from the food usually served on the Wharf, Alioto's San Francisco's landmark restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf is creating a new niche: serving food reminiscent of the area's history classic recipes from the fishermen's predominantly Sicilian homeland. While the move was a bold departure from the standard tourist fare served on the Wharf, the menu meets with rave reviews.
At the heart of the new cuisine are Sicilian regional recipes that have been handed down from Rose Alioto, the restaurant's founder and longtime inspiration. "We grew up on Rose's Penne Rigate," remembers Joe and Nunzio Alioto, who together head the restaurant's operations. "Today, we prepare and serve this seafood pasta dish in a more delicate way, but Rose's influence is still there." (Penne Rigate Alioto is a pasta dish prepared with penne [short pasta tubes] tossed with fresh tomatoes, basil, eggplant, cream and ricotta cheese.)
Most of the new menu dishes have a strong seafood influence, and are prepared in new interpretations of culinary classics. The menu revision began with seafood passed down from their grandmother, Rose Alioto, and now includes the fusion food characteristic of the Bay Area with touches of Asian influences as well, seen in the Salmon Kal-bi style, salmon marinated in sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic and scallions, served with steamed rice.
Sharing the billing on the menu are San Francisco Favorites standards such as fried calamari, crab, clams and other specialties of the Wharf that remain popular with visitors to the Bay Area. Seafood remains a staple on the menu, with strong Sicilian accents. Only fresh fish is served at the restaurant.
"Alioto's has always set the pace for the Wharf," notes Nunzio Alioto. "We hope that other restaurants in the area will follow our direction and offer more dishes that reflect the area's Italian and multi-ethnic heritage. The Wharf is rich in San Francisco history, and we would like the people who live here to enjoy the views and atmosphere and especially the food."
The new menu also boasts a fresh new look. The cover design reflects the vibrant colors and patterns found in the ceramics of the Alioto's native Sicily. To complement the cuisine, Nunzio Alioto has carefully selected a wine list featuring Californian and Italian wines which has won the Wine Spectator's and Wine Enthusiast's Award of Excellence. A respected oenophile, in 1987, Nunzio passed rigid examinations to join the exclusive legion of 124 practicing Master Sommeliers in the United States.
